Huang Ko Wei

Huang Ko Wei (b.1988) in Taipei, now lives and works in Taipei. He holds a BFA and an MFA degree from the Taipei National University of the Arts. In his acrylic paintings, the artist delves into the theme of fluidity both in painterly language and his identity as an academically trained painter. In Huang’s deftly portrayed human figures, animals, and architectural space, the tension between ambiguity and legibility not only reveals the intentionally blurred boundary between representation and abstraction, an active response to the history of painting, but also indicates the artist’s relentless attempt at breaking free from the existing aesthetic convention. Huang’s work addresses a sense of liminality in relation to the post-colonial history in East Asia, depicting a site of continuous transitions and transformations resulting from cultural and political forces to the understanding of oneself and the others.
