Shigeta begins with everyday photographs, capturing geometry and light in the cities he moves through. His anti-pastoral urban landscapes reframe overlooked architectural moments—gardens, fences, facades—through shifts in pictorial perspective. Obstructed views, compressed backgrounds, and absent foregrounds create spatial tension and highlight moments one might otherwise simply walk past. Extending beyond the painted surface, Shigeta’s custom, artist-made frames and use of found materials push the works into a sculptural realm, turning each painting into a physical encounter with space. Masamitsu Shigeta (b. 1992, Tokyo, Japan) lives and works between Phuket, Thailand, and Hoboken, New Jersey. He received his MFA from New York University and BFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York. Known for his urban landscapes presented in artist-made frames, his work has been exhibited internationally and acquired by the Dallas Museum of Art.
